Eating in the City

A History
Here we aim to give a potted history of what used to be grown, used and sold in the city. Also highlight the exotic crops that have appeared by accident in the city due to its industrial heritage.

Did you know that the during the war the Porter Brook flooded and trout swam into nearby cellars, and may well have been used for food? (A while ago their descendants were evacuated from the river due to the Ward's brewery redevelopment; and were returned to their homes when the building work was over).

We've also been told about apple orchards that used to cover large areas of the North East of the city and whose remnants are now garden boundaries. Do you know any tales of Sheffields food history, or even any old recipes?
